Recovery after a Mommy Makeover
Convalescence, pain management, return to activities and follow-up: what you need to know about the aftercare.
The recovery period after a Mommy Makeover depends closely on the procedures carried out. You should allow at most one month for complete healing, and only in the case of abdominal muscle repair (diastasis repair); the aftercare is quicker for the other procedures. Dr Paul Seknadje supports every patient throughout this period, with clear instructions and regular follow-up.
The evolution of scars and results
Scars evolve and fade over the months. Their placement is planned so that they remain hidden under underwear and swimwear. The result becomes clearer gradually, as the swelling (oedema) resolves, and the final appearance can usually be assessed from several months after the procedure.
It should be remembered that results vary according to the individual surgical plan, the anatomy and the healing particular to each patient. No aesthetic surgery procedure can be subject to a guarantee of result. Scrupulous compliance with post-operative instructions, giving up smoking and a healthy lifestyle promote a smooth recovery and a lasting result.
The right habits during convalescence
During the first few weeks, relative rest is essential: the aim is to avoid strain, carrying heavy loads and positions that place demands on the operated area. Gentle walking, on the other hand, is encouraged early on to promote circulation. Good hydration, a balanced diet and sufficient sleep contribute fully to the quality of healing.
Risks
Like any surgical procedure, the Mommy Makeover carries risks. They remain rare and are largely prevented by rigorous care and compliance with instructions. Here are the main ones, explained in full transparency.
Smoking and healing
Smoking is the main risk factor for healing complications. By reducing the oxygenation of the tissues, it increases the risk of delayed healing, of the sutures coming apart and, in the most severe cases, of skin necrosis. Stopping smoking 2 weeks before and after the procedure is essential in order to optimise the quality of healing. Signing a "smoker's" specific consent form will be required.
The thromboembolic risk
Like any surgical procedure of extended duration, the Mommy Makeover carries a risk of phlebitis or pulmonary embolism. Fortunately rare, this risk is completely prevented by appropriate care: early mobilisation, compression stockings, anticoagulant treatment and the use of compression boots during the procedure and the first post-operative night. In addition, any flight longer than 2 hours is prohibited during the 10 days after the procedure.
Lymphorrhoea
A temporary leak of lymphatic fluid (lymphorrhoea) can, exceptionally, occur after certain abdominal procedures, particularly when substantial liposuction is combined. Most often, it disappears spontaneously or with local care such as aspiration, without any effect on the final result.
Healing
Every surgeon performs sutures according to precise technical principles. However, the definitive quality of scars depends largely on the biological reaction particular to each patient. Age, skin quality, medical history, smoking and individual predispositions all influence their evolution. Scars continue to improve for 12 to 18 months and require attentive follow-up throughout this period.
The surgeon performs the operation. The body does the healing. The two are inseparable in achieving a beautiful result.
